2 Arrested In String Of San Leandro Robberies
SAN LEANDRO (BCN) - San Leandro police have arrested two men suspected of robbing a Wells Fargo bank, a KFC, and a Starbucks, police said Tuesday.
Edward Lewis, 38, of San Leandro, was arrested at about 9:15 p.m. Friday after San Leandro police and Alameda County sheriff's deputies spotted him driving a car in unincorporated San Leandro, Lt. Jeff Tudor said.
Lewis was recently released from probation for conspiracy to commit robbery at the time of his arrest, Tudor said.
Christopher Gayden, 30, of San Leandro was arrested by Oakland police on Saturday morning at around 3 a.m. after an officer recognized him from an alert flier that was put out by the San Leandro Police Department, Tudor said.
Gayden was on parole out of the Los Angeles area at the time and was allegedly armed with a rifle during the robberies, Tudor said.
Both suspects have extensive criminal histories for various crimes including drug sales, assaults, theft and robbery, he said.
On Jan. 10, at about 10:20 a.m., Lewis and Gayden allegedly entered the Wells Fargo Bank at 1298 East 14th St., police Lt. Jeff Tudor said.
One of the suspects allegedly jumped over the counter and took cash from several tellers while the other stood in front of the counter with a rifle, Tudor said. The pair then fled on foot.
Police believe Gayden and Lewis might also have been responsible for robberies at two other San Leandro businesses—a KFC at 15179 Hesperian Blvd. and a Starbucks at 13808 East 14th St., Tudor said.
Both suspects will be going to court to face charges on Wednesday.
