19-Year-Old Driver Dies In Wreck After CHP Chase
OAKLAND (CBS SF) - Investigators found open containers of alcohol in the car of a 19-year-old Oakland man who died Wednesday morning after he crashed on an Interstate Highway 880 off-ramp following a brief chase, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was not wearing a seatbelt, Officer Sam Morgan said.
The chase began at about 1:20 a.m. after CHP officers spotted a white Honda driving erratically on International Boulevard near 55th Avenue, Morgan said.
The officers attempted to pull over the car, but the driver didn't stop, he said. A brief pursuit followed, and the Honda entered northbound I-880 near Hegenberger Road.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
The driver then exited the highway at the 29th Avenue off-ramp and crashed under the 29th Avenue overcrossing at East Ninth Street.
The driver was ejected from the car and suffered major injuries, Morgan said. He was taken to Highland Hospital, where he later died.
There were no passengers in the car, and no other injuries were reported.
The 29th Avenue off-ramp was closed for several hours while the CHP investigated the crash. It was reopened at about 8 a.m., Morgan said.
