18-Year-Old Shot At San Jose McDonald's Dies
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- San Jose police have identified the 18-year-old from a Wednesday shooting in a McDonald's driveway as Ruben Cortez Jr., of San Jose.
Cortez remained on life support until Sunday, although he was pronounced clinically dead on Thursday, San Jose police Sergeant Jason Dwyer said.
Police are continuing to investigate the shooting, which took place at 898 S. Bascom Ave. in San Jose. A few minutes after noon on Wednesday, the shooter apparently walked up to Cortez and shot him once at close range then ran north on South Bascom Avenue, police spokesman Officer Jose Garcia said.
Cortez was taken to nearby Santa Clara Valley Medical Center at 751 S. Bascom Ave., where he later died.
Police believe this is possibly a gang-related homicide. Dwyer said investigators know enough to think it is gang related, but are still searching for the shooter, who is described as a Hispanic or white male in his late teens or early 20s with a light complexion.
Police asked any witness or people information to come forward and call (408) 277-5283.
