18 Arrested For Public Intoxication At New Year's Eve Event In Downtown San Francisco And Along Embarcadero
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – As thousands of revelers gathered in downtown San Francisco and near the Embarcadero to ring in the New Year, San Francisco police were busy trying to keep the peace.
"We had 18 people that were arrested for public intoxication. We had six felony arrests and one misdemeanor arrest," said San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza. "We did have two weapons recovered, and this is just for the area where the New Year's Eve event was held."
All told, police responded to two shootings on New Year's Eve and two more early on New Year's Day. The first shooting was reported shortly after 6:00 p.m. in the area of Jerrold Avenue and Third Street in the Bayview District, when a red two-door sedan pulled over in front of a residence in the area and someone fired numerous rounds. Police said the suspect vehicle attempted to flee the scene but crashed into another vehicle, injuring four people. One suspect was taken into custody but no word from police about a possible second suspect.
The second shooting on New Year's Eve was reported at about 10:20 p.m. in the 700 block of Market Street, about a block from Union Square, when a male suspect shot two victims, one in the upper chest and another in the foot. Police were able to apprehend the suspect after a brief pursuit.
Esparza said shortly after midnight, a shooting was reported in the area of Fisherman's Wharf. "A suspect tried shooting at an intended target. There was an innocent bystander who just happened to be in the area that was struck in the back," Esparza said. "That person is a female and she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She is expected to survive."
About an hour later, a shooting was reported in the Sunnyside public housing complex in Vistitacion Valley. Police said two male suspects approached a man in his 50s in the 1800 block of Sunnydale Avenue near Santos Street and began shooting. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was also grazed in the head. The two suspects in that case have not yet been identified.
All the victims in the shootings are expected to survive.
