1 Protester Arrested For Vandalism During Oakland Anti-Police March
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- One protester was arrested for felony vandalism during an anti-police march in Oakland Friday night, police said.
Protesters gathered in Henry J. Kaiser Park on 19th Street in Oakland's Uptown neighborhood shortly after 7 p.m., in front of the large "Remember Them" sculpture depicting political leaders throughout history.
Protesters there said they had gathered because of an arrest Wednesday of an Occupy Oakland member identified by protesters as Chris Moreland.
Occupy Oakland activists said Moreland was arrested at the Fruitvale Bay Area Rapid Transit station after protesting at a community meeting where police Chief Howard Jordan answered questions regarding a fatal police shooting earlier this month.
Protesters marched through the streets of downtown Oakland for several hours that night, chanting anti-police slogans in a largely peaceful protest.
Police said one arrest was made during Friday's march at 9:10 p.m. after a window was broken in the 400 block of Webster Street. That protester, who was not immediately identified, was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism, an Oakland police officer said.
After the march, a contingent of protesters left to wait outside of Santa Rita Jail in Dublin anticipating Moreland's release early Saturday morning.
Protesters vowed that they would return to Oakland streets for their weekly ant-police march Saturday night as well.
