1 Killed, 2 Injured In Series Of San Jose Traffic Collisions
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - One pedestrian was killed, and another pedestrian and a cyclist were injured, in a series of unrelated traffic crashes over the course of 20 minutes Wednesday night, according to San Jose police.
A 67-year-old woman in the crosswalk on Jackson Avenue at Alexian Drive was sideswiped by a Nissan Sentra at 6:35 p.m. and later died at Regional Medical Center, police said.
The driver remained at the scene after the collision and cooperated with investigators.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
Ten minutes later, a 54-year-old man crossing Tulley Road was critically injured when he was hit by a Honda, according to a spokesman for the San Jose Police Department.
Officer Jose Garcia said five minutes after that, a bicyclist was also struck on Tulley Road just a few blocks away. Authorities said the 44-year-old cyclist may not survive his injuries.
Police have not released the names of any of the victims.
Investigators suspect the end of Daylight Saving Time may be a factor behind the sudden cluster of traffic collisions.
On Tuesday, 58-year-old Jinggang Tan died from injuries sustained during a crash in West San Jose the night before.
Garcia said the impact of a collision between Tan's bicycle and a 2003 Ford Expedition driving westbound on Moorpark Avenue at Brentwood Drive shortly before 6 o'clock Monday night threw Tan into the path of a 2006 Toyota Prius.
Both drivers stayed at the scene to cooperate with police.
"There is no indication that they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs," Garcia said.
Tan survived the crash only to succumbed to his injuries the next day at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
The bicycle crash came after a pedestrian fatality over the weekend. Police said that victim, 20-year-old Jessenia Camacho-Torres, was also hit by two cars. She died at the scene of the crash on Branham Lane between Pearl Avenue and La Crescent Loop.
In all, 14 pedestrians and bicyclists have been killed in San Jose this year.
