Hayward Police Officer Kills Driver Of Stolen Car Near School
HAYWARD (KCBS) - The driver of a stolen car was shot and killed by a Hayward police officer near an elementary school on Friday, according to the Hayward Police Department.
The driver of a green Honda Accord parked at Fairway Greens Park near Vanderbilt Street and Briergate Way refused to comply with commands, a police spokesman said.
An officer opened fire around 11:12 a.m. when the driver reached for what appeared to be a weapon, authorities said. An ambulance took the driver to Eden Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
KCBS' Susan Kennedy Reports:
Neither the name of the officer nor the suspect has been released.
Students at Treeview Elementary on the other side of the park were outside for recess during the incident. Police said the children were too far away to have been hurt, although the school was placed on lockdown for about 15 minutes.
Video showed a number of evidence markers on the ground along with bloody clothing next to a car that appeared to have been hit with bullets.
This is the second deadly officer-involved shooting in Hayward in two weeks. A man shot and killed by Hayward police outside a bar on Sept. 26 has been identified as a gang member, according to the Hayward Police Department.
