The nicknames endure: Will the Thrill, "Chili" Davis, The Candy Man and HacMan. The 1987 San Francisco Giants won the team's first division crown since 1971 and were so close to making the franchise's first World Series since 1962, but the magic ran out in Games Six and Seven of the National League Championship Series in St. Louis and the team would have to wait two more years for a return to the Fall Classic.

Great Moments In Baseball History: 1971 San Francisco Giants Win First NL West Division Crown

After moving to the West Coast in 1958, the Giants baseball organization wasn't very successful. They'd lost the 1962 World Series in seven games to the New York Yankees, but it was almost a decade later before San Francisco made the playoffs again. Willie McCovey was 33, and Willie Mays was 40. So, it was a young star—Bobby Bonds—who led this Giants squad to the first National League West division title in team history.
