Yuba County Investigators Determined To Find Teen's Murderer
YUBA COUNTY (CBS13) -- A local woman told her parents she would meet them church, but never made it. Five years later, detectives are hitting the streets once again to solve this murder cold case.
A Yuba County Sheriff's spokesperson told CBS13 they plan to re-interview people and they'll also rely on new technology to help crack the case.
For this department, solving the case isn't just their job, but it's their mission as well.
"Somebody has to know something, but nobody's talking," said the victim's mother, Magdalena Ferreyra.
When Magdalena Ferrreya thinks of her daughter she can't help but also think of her daughter's killer.
"I also have dreams that somebody speaks or that somebody says something," said Magdalena.
For the last five years, Magdalena has prayed that investigators would track down whoever killed her daughter, Chairo Garibay. Her body was found wrapped in a plastic tarp along a dirt road near her home and showed evidence of being hit on the head.
Chairo had vanished a month before while getting ready for church.
"I told her I will see her over there. I gave her a hug and kiss, that was all," said Magdalena.
Yuba County Sheriff's investigators say this crime affected them a little differently than others. By all appearances, Chairo never got into trouble. She had just been accepted into Sac State, worked at a video store and had no enemies, said Magdalena.
"We really want to find the person responsible for this. She's like the girl next door," said Yuba County Sheriff's Spokesperson Melanie Oakes.
With no new evidence and no new leads or suspects, investigators say they'll be looking again at the fingerprint left at the crime scene, re-canvass Chairo's neighborhood, question potential witnesses and speak to her friends. They'd also like to speak to her then-boyfriend who's since moved to Pakistan.
"He continues to be a person of interest in the case," said Oakes.
It's a case that won't be forgotten.
The only time Magdalena smiled in our interview was when she described her daughter.
"She was always very happy," said Magdalena.
Investigators believe they will solve this case. They used the case of accused serial killer Joseph Naso's case as an example. He's accused of murdering two women in this area more than 10 years ago and just was recently arrested.
