LOMA RICA — A Northern California man faces up to 80 years to life in prison for sexually abusing the 8-year-old daughter of the woman he was dating, authorities said Wednesday.

Charles Brewer, of the Yuba County town of Loma Rica, was found guilty of three counts of sodomizing a child under the age of 10, two counts of using a minor to create child pornography, one count of possession of child pornography, one count of making criminal threats and one count of battery on a spouse, the Yuba County District Attorney's Office said.

On January 3, 2024, the child's mother found videos of the acts on Brewer's phone and confronted him about it, prosecutors said. Brewer hit the mother in her head and took the cell phone away from her.

During the altercation, the mother was able to call 911 and attempted to keep Brewer from leaving the home before law enforcement arrived. Prosecutors said Brewer hurried out of the house barefoot and in pajamas and threatened to run the mother over.

Within 90 minutes, sheriff's deputies located Brewer northwest in Oroville. Deputies located Brewer's phone, which he attempted to hide, in his vehicle's headliner, prosecutors said.

Among the evidence found on the phone were two videos depicting the illicit acts and nearly 1,000 images of child porn — some depicting children being sexually assaulted by animals, prosecutors said.

Brewer, 37, is scheduled to be sentenced on March 3 in Yuba County court.
