Yuba City Man Arrested In Aftermath Of Weekend Brawl At Sikh Temple
YUBA CITY (CBS13) - A Yuba City man was arrested Wednesday and accused of stabbing another man after violence erupted at the Sikh Temple over the weekend.
Sutter County sheriff's detectives arrested Mangal Singh Sanghera, 43, of Yuba City. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and violation of probation. He's being held without bail at the Sutter County Jail.
Deputies responded to a report of a large altercation at the temple on Tierra Buena Road on Saturday night involving 50-100 people fighting with sticks.
Deputies found a 30-year-old man with a stab wound to his upper body. Another man, identified by the Appeal-Democrat newspaper as 46-year-old Balbir Bains, was stabbed in the stomach.
The fight is the latest outbreak of violence between two opposing factions at the temple. Tensions have escalated after the current board of directors voted in August to extend their term limits two years rather than hold a scheduled election.
The fight took place a week after the annual Sikh Parade attracted thousands to Yuba City for the a religious procession celebrating the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism.
Detectives believe that there may be witnesses to this event who have yet to come forward and they do anticipate more arrests.
