UPDATE: 2 Workers Killed In Fall From Crane At Winters Construction Site
WINTERS (CBS13) – Authorities say that two construction workers were killed when they fell from a crane at a bridge construction site outside of Winters Friday morning.
According to the Winters Fire Department, the men were working on a bridge project near Railroad Avenue and Wolfskill Road when the accident happened.
The men reportedly fell a substantial distance and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire officials tell CBS13 the two workers were in what's called a "man basket" attached to the crane. The basket, for an unknown reason, suddenly fell to the ground.
"Ultimately our crews went down and determined that we had two deceased persons who were non-viable," said. Aaron McAllister, Fire Chief of the Winters Fire Department.
Officials say that the recovery operation will take some time, as both of the men's bodies are said to be in a precarious position at the footing of the bridge. The bodies were recovered later Friday afternoon.
Richard Disney, the owner of Disney Construction, called the two workers part of his family, and was visibly shaken by the news of the accident.
It's something that's on the forefront of our minds every day," he said. "We have safety meetings. We discuss the hazards of the job. We've had a good record. This is horrible."
Disney Construction has no connection to the Walt Disney Company.
Some of the construction workers may have been related to the workers who died, meaning they saw both family and co-workers fall to their death on the same day.
The project has been in the works since September of last year. The men were working to replace the old bridge.
Numerous agencies, including the Winters Fire Department, the Yolo County Sheriff's Department, the Dixon Fire Department and Cal/OSHA came to the scene.
