Woman Sent To Mental Hospital For Bus Stop Shooting

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A homeless woman who was found not guilty by reason of insanity for shooting a disabled man at a Sacramento bus stop after he refused to give her money is heading to a mental hospital.

The Sacramento Bee reports that a judge on Friday ordered 50-year-old Audrey Jackson to spend 34 years to life in Napa State Hospital.

Jackson had faced both murder and attempted murder charges in the September 2008 shooting of Francisco Perez.

Prosecutors say Jackson pulled a .22-caliber handgun from her fanny pack and shot Perez after he rebuffed her panhandling. Jackson had cerebral palsy and walked with a cane.

Jurors acquitted Jackson of murder because they couldn't conclusively link the shooting to Perez's death 13 months later. They convicted her of attempted murder before determining her sanity.
