Woman Killed In Alleged El Dorado County Carjacking; Suspect Crashes Car In Neighborhood
EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) — It was close to midnight when two women decided to share one final glass of wine at 36 Handles Pub. They were the last customers to leave.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office says the women were approached by a felon from Oakland who demanded money and car keys. Instead, the women ran from Anderson Swift.
"They just about made it to the door when one was shot by the suspect and killed on the scene," said Lt. Tom Murdoch.
The other woman escaped, thanks to the help of an employee.
"My bartender had yelled to have her come around the side to get her in the pub and into safe premises," said 36 Handles Pub owner Vinal Perkins.
The man first smashed the window of the car, but couldn't start it. He then grabbed the keys off the body of the woman he had just killed and sped off.
But as he fled down Silva Parkway, something happened that attracted the attention of Wyatt Mavea and other neighbors.
"It sounded like he hit something like a curb or tree. Then I heard crashing noises and sounded like his car was rolling," Mavea said.
The stolen car was on fire, and the neighbors helped pull him out.
"Suspect then fled from the car," Murdoch said. "Made it a few doors down when sheriff's office and CHP contacted him."
Officers on scene quickly realized why the man was running.
"It's kind of scary to think that we were trying to help someone who had done something like that," Mavea said.
Officers say Swift was injured in the crash and taken to the hospital. He's now in police custody, facing murder and auto theft charges.
