Woman Critically Injured After Police Shooting In S.F.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A woman is hospitalized with what's being described as life-threatening injures after she was shot by Daly City police in San Francisco, authorities said.

The woman was shot after Daly City officers tried to pull over the car she was driving around 7 p.m. Saturday, San Francisco Police Officer Albie Esparza said.

Instead of stopping, the woman accelerated and crashed into a nearby home, according to Esparza.

The woman then put the car in reverse, hitting a Daly City police officer, said Esparza.

Police opened fire, striking the woman at least once. Esparza did not know how many times the woman was shot, but said San Francisco police were not involved in the shooting.

A male passenger inside the car was taken into custody. The officer hit by the car suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Esparza did not know why Daly City police tried to pull the woman over, but said the incident took place near the border of the two cities.

The names of the woman or of her male passenger have not been released.

San Francisco police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, along with the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, while Daly City police are handling the administrative side of the investigation, according to Esparza.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press early Sunday afternoon, Daly City police said they had no information to release on the incident.
