Woman Attacked By Pit Bull But Dog Back With Owners
RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) - A woman said she was viciously attacked by a pit bull outside her local business, but the dog has been released and is back with its owners.
Animal Services said the dog was released because police don't have enough evidence to prove the attack was unprovoked.
Jamie Hunter is now relearning how to walk after the pit bull mauled her behind her business in Rancho Cordova.
The attack happened while the dog's owners were digging through dumpsters.
"There's nothing there," she said in tears Monday, pointing to a wound to her leg. "There's a hole. There's a hole and no muscle."
Jamie and her husband were closing up shop when she heard people out back. She said dumpster divers have become a huge problem in the area, so she grabbed a baseball bat and went to check it out.
"I was more than 30 feet away from them when I asked, 'Why are you doing this?'" she said. "I didn't get it fully out of my mouth when out of the darkness of their van, the biggest pit I had ever seen came running at me full charge. I saw my whole life change and I knew that dog intended to kill me."
Jamie says the dog latched onto her leg and took her down. Blood went everywhere.
"People ask, 'Where did that chunk of your leg go?'" she said. "It went to his stomach and then he fought even harder."
She said the owners of the dog did nothing to help. Surveillance video shows Jamie's husband rescuing her, but the damage had already been done.
"It truly was a surreal nightmare and we relive it every day," she said.
But police say the dog owners have a different story, and their dog was only trying to protect them from a woman with a bat.
Meanwhile, Jamie's injuries are severe enough to change her life forever.
"It's a horrible feeling to think you're not protected anywhere," she said.
Police are still investigating and the Hunters are still pressing for charges against the dog's owners and for the dog to be euthanized.
