Dust Warning Issued For San Joaquin Valley
STOCKTON (CBS13) - Gusty winds have prompted air officials in the San Joaquin Valley to warn of a potential health hazard from blowing dust.
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District issued the warning on Wednesday for San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties and parts of Kern County.
Wind gusts could reach 30-40 mph in the Stockton and Modesto areas Wednesday. The Sacramento area will also be breezy with gusts around 20-25 mph.
Winds there may produce areas of localized blowing dust that could trigger asthma attacks and acute bronchitis, aggravate lung disease and increase the risk of respiratory infections.
The air district advises people to reduce prolonged exposure to the air and strenuous activities. Older adults and children should avoid such exposure and activities altogether.
The warning is in effect through Wednesday evening.
More weather changes are in store heading into Memorial Day Weekend. Thursday the high tempeartuares should stay in the 70s. Friday, the clouds are expected to roll in. The best chance of rain is in the northern Sierra, but a couple showers, even an isolated thunderstorm, is possible in the Sacramento area and foothills Friday afternoon or evening.
There's even 2-4 inches of snow possible above 7500 feet in the mountains as we head into Saturday morning, which could impact hikers and campers.
The rest of the weekend including Monday's holiday, should be mostly sunny and warming from the upper 70s back into the low to mid-80s by Monday.
