Wife: Officer Recovering From Vehicle Hit
ROSEVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) -- The off-duty officer who was mowed down near a Roseville restaurant Sunday is alert and joking with family members while recovering in the hospital, according to his wife.
Sacramento Police Detective Bobby Daniels, 47, was struck by an out-of-control Jeep while standing in front of the Chili's restaurant on Blue Oaks Boulevard on Sunday afternoon, just seconds after he handed his 8-month-old daughter to her sister, according to Daniels' wife Stephanie.
"Just by the grace of God she wasn't hurt," said Stephanie, a Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy. "I don't think she would have survived."
The Sacramento detective was thrown into the windshield and then pulled under the wheels as the vehicle, driven by 20-year-old Ilio Arthur Wong, came to a stop on the road.
Wong and his passenger showed visible signs of being under the influence of drugs, Stephanie said.
Daniels suffered a skull fracture and was rushed to the hospital as his frightened family watched helplessly.
"His children lost their mother a few years ago to cancer," Stephanie said. "One of the things his daughter was saying is, 'I can't lose my dad, too.'"
Wong, a Rocklin resident, was arrested under drug-related DUI charges. He was charged in 2009 for possession of marijuana on a school campus and his license had previously been suspended for a year for another marijuana possession offense, according to Placer County court records.
Daniels had 30 stitches and a metal plate inserted into his head and is in stable condition, Stephanie said. The detective is alert and is even joking about the incident, asking his wife if "he is still pretty," she said.
