Who Burned Holly The Terrier Mix In Elk Grove?
ELK GROVE (CBS13) — A dog was found with severe burns in Elk Grove, prompting a search for its owner, and the person who was responsible for the dog's injuries.
Elk Grove Animal Control says it's one of the worst cases of animal abuse it's seen.
The Elk Grove Police Department is still early in its investigation, but says if someone did intentionally harm the dog, they could face felony charges.
Dog owners at an Elk Grove dog park were horrified when they saw what happened to the dog.
Maureen McCann, the animal control supervisor, says the dog was in a lot of pain and had to immediately be taken to the vet for extensive treatment.
"To receive an animal this severely injured not having owner information. Not knowing how long this dog suffered is really heartbreaking," she said.
The dog was found near Elk Grove-Florin Road and Elk Grove Boulevard. The terrier mix didn't have a microchip, collar or name tag.
McCann says it's one of the worst cases of animal abuse she's seen.
"The injuries were at least if not 2-3 days old, so she had been this way for several days, suffering," she said.
They named the dog Holly, as she was found around the holidays. Despite everything she's been through, animal control staff says she's still a loving and happy puppy.
"She just has that bubbly, and holly personality so that was perfect for her," McCann said.
Holly is doing much better now, but the search is on for the dog's owner, and who was responsible for her injuries.
"Based on where the severity of the burns and where they were at throughout her body, it's moving more toward an intentional," McCann said.
