Where Did The UC Davis Men's Basketball Championship Banner Go?
By Kelly Ryan
DAVIS (CBS13) — It's a UC Davis mystery that has officials wondering where the men's basketball team's 1998 Division II Championship banner has gone.
UC Davis basketball Coach Jim Les is preparing his team for the championships this year, but he now finds himself with a new mission.
The banner hasn't been seen in months. Assistant coach Kevin Nosek was on that winning team and says he was shocked to find it not hanging on its place of honor.
"I noticed it and I thought that sure is odd that it's not in there I thought maybe they were doing something new to it," he said.
The pavilion where team banners hang hosts a variety of other events and campus representatives say the banners are sometimes taken down and put back up later. They couldn't say what happened to this one. Nosek thinks it's been misplaced, but he's heard a lot of theories.
"A lot of rumors going around I think it was popular is that it's in my house somewhere," he said.
Darius Graham and his teammates aren't so sure it's been accidentally lost, but they hope it turns up or is replaced soon, saying it's a matter of pride for the university.
"I guess we're on the search right now Sherlock Holmes trying to find out where the banner is," he said.
Les agrees, adding when it goes back up he hopes there's a little space nearby for yet another banner.
"The goal is to add another banner and find the one we lost," he said.
