What Are Sacramento's Chances Of Hosting Next Year's NBA All-Star Game?
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The NBA commissioner's decision to move the 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte could give Sacramento a shot at hosting the event.
The Golden 1 Center will open as the Sacramento Kings' new arena for the first time this season, and Sacramento city leaders who campaigned to build this arena have said they want an NBA All-Star Game here.
"All I know, we build a brand-new arena downtown in 2016, which we're gonna do, we need to get an All-Star Game because that was part of the deal," Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson told CBS13 in 2015. "If we build a new arena, we hope to get an all-star game."
Neither the mayor, Kings' management, nor the NBA commissioner's office would comment on any lobbying efforts to host next year's All-Star Game, but Silver set a short timetable for a decision, issuing a statement reading, in part:
"The NBA will make an announcement on the new location of the 2017 NBA All-Star Game in the coming weeks."
One sticking point for Sacramento remains hotel rooms. The NBA requires a minimum of 5,500 rooms for All-Star Weekend. Sacramento only has 3,500.
