Wet Weather May Hamper Yolo County Murder Investigation

WOODLAND, Calif. (CBS13) -- The recent heavy rainfall in the Sacramento Valley may have washed away evidence in the murder investigation of a Yolo County rancher, authorities said.

Workers at the historic Nelson Ranch near Woodland found owner Wayne King dead from a gunshot wound to his head on Friday. The first front of the weekend's storm system had already struck the area by the time the victim was found outside his mobile home on the ranch.

Yolo County Sheriff Ed Prieto said bad weather can cause problems for investigators when combing murder scenes for evidence.

"It could be footprints, it could be tire tracks," Prieto said. "When you have this kind of intensive rain… it really impairs the investigation."

The murder "appears that it's going in the direction" of turning into an unusual case, Prieto added.

Further details on the case have not been released. Employees at the ranch did not comment on the case.
