West Sacramento Residents Say Trees, Development Boom Can Coexist
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — West Sacramento's growth is causing controversy, as conservation groups are crying foul over trees that could be cut down.
A new construction project that includes new condominiums threatens the existence of the trees, which Lana Paulhamus and West Sacramento Conservancy intend to protect.
"The original intent of these trees was to beautify the experience of crossing over into the capital of California," she said. "The reason they're being removed for condos didn't make sense to us."
She's asked the West Sacramento City Council to reconsider removing the trees.
Mayor Chris Cabaldon says the city has asked the developers to take another look.
"They need additional permits from the city, including a new assessment of the health of the trees," he said.
Initially the developer had clearance to take out the trees, but Cabaldon says phase two is still at least a year away, and a lot can change.
Paulhamus says her organization isn't against the growth boom in West Sacramento, but she thinks the condos can be built while still saving the trees.
"There has to be a way to do both and make both sides of the story happy," she said.
