$6K In Gifts Stolen After Baby Shower

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Thieves stole about $6,000 worth of baby shower presents and cards filled with money from a local family who left the gifts out in their backyard overnight.

"I don't mean to cry," said the West Sacramento mother-to-be as she talked to CBS13 on Tuesday.

The expecting mom is emotional all right, and you can't blame her after thieves stole from her unborn boy, Chase, who is due in late June.

Late Saturday night, thieves made their appearance in the back of the home and hauled away all the presents.

"You can see where they used the fence to step on. They bent the fence," said the father-to-be, Jimmy Korteum.

It was unwelcome, unnerving, and, yes, unbelievably easy. We had to ask why the gifts were left outside overnight.

"The only thing I can say is we've done it a hundred times," Jimmy said. "I know hindsight is 20-20 and I would never do it again now."

To be fair, the presents weren't visible from the street, tucked in the corner of a large park-like backyard.

"This was our little oasis," he said.

But the peaceful setting has been rocked by reality. But what about those who say it was the parents' own fault for being naïve.

"If that's the case, they don't know the situation," he said.

That situation is one built on a tradition of trusting your fellow man, which - just like the gifts themselves - in this case has disappeared.
