SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Northern California will likely be subjected to more periodic wind gusts, rain and cold temperatures until the series of winter-like storms subsides Wednesday.

A cold storm will bring rain to the Central Valley and snow to the upper Sierra in two phases -- the first arriving overnight and the second hitting later Tuesday afternoon.

There may be a brief lull between the two storms during the day, but the unsettled weather may cause thunderstorms in some regions.

Several inches of snow are expected to accumulate over the estimated 4,500 foot snowline, with as much as two feet of snow possible at elevations above 7,500 feet, according to meteorologists.

Wind gusts over the mountain passes are expected to top 45 miles per hour, making travel difficult.

Once the storm clears out Wednesday morning, temperatures will rise over the rest of the week and may bring highs in the upper 70s before the weekend.
