Wayward Seal Flown To Bay Area From Hawaii
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) – A lost northern fur seal that showed up on a Hawaii beach thousands of miles from home is flying to California.
A FedEx flight to Oakland carrying the seal took off from Honolulu Thursday afternoon.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokeswoman Wende Goo said a veterinarian and staff member are accompanying the animal to make sure she's OK.
The young female seal was emaciated, underweight and weak when people found her on Oahu's North Shore Tuesday.
The Marine Mammal Center will pick her up from the Oakland airport and take care of her until she's ready to return to the wild.
Northern fur seals normally live in waters around Russia, Alaska and California. Officials said it's the first time a wild fur seal has shown up in Hawaii.
