Washington Fire Near Markleeville Grows To 8,000 Acres
MARKLEEVILLE (CBS13) - Firefighters say about 8,000 acres have burned in a wildfire burning about eight miles south of Markleeville, California, which is south of Nevada's Douglas County.
The fire, which is being called the Washington Fire, is on the west side of Highway 4 and has required an evacuation from the river up to the north end of Markleeville.
According to Sierra Front Fire Agency, it is a high priority to protect the town of Markleeville.
All visitors and campers from Wolfcreek to the top of Ebbitts Pass were evacuated.
Highway 89, Monitor Pass, was closed at the junction with Highway 395 and highway 4 was closed near the fire.
Because of the remote location, firefighters are having to hike overland great distances or be deployed via helicopter.
Strong, erratic winds and drought conditions are feeding the flames, according to a statement from fire officials.
The fire began on Friday at around 7 p.m. and was caused by lightning.
