Violent Crimes Prompt Changes To Davis Whole Earth Festival

DAVIS (CBS13)  — There were three violent crimes at the Whole Earth Festival on the campus of UC Davis over the weekend.

The video CBS13 shot of the Whole Earth Festival is in sharp contrast to the series of violent crimes now connected to it.

"It's pretty shocking," said one festival attendee.

A 16-year-old girl says she was led from a courtyard where a techno music stage was set up, into Wellman Hall where she was raped.

"I do know some of the halls are open late and they're not monitored," says Judy Reyes, UC Davis student.

Near the same stage, a separate sexual assault and beating allegedly took place.

UC Davis Police have made an arrest in the case of the beating; the suspect is a 19-year-old Woodland resident who is now facing a felony charge.

But the series of crimes has forced the Whole Earth Festival directors to cancel the techno stage next year, which is another safety concentrate for UC Davis Police, who are already weary of the university's Picnic Day.  A student died after a post-Picnic Day party last month.
