VIDEO: Stunning Jellyfish Spotted Near Mariana Trench
Researchers captured beautifully haunting video of a unique jellyfish they spotted deep in the ocean this week.
The hydromedusae was filmed during a dive into the deepest part of the ocean - the Mariana Trench. NOAA researchers say the jelly was seen at a depth of more than 12,000 feet.
Its exact species isn't known, but scientists say the jelly is a part of the Crossota genus.
When the jellyfish is seen with its long tentacles extended and its bell motionless (as shown in the beginning of the video), scientists believe it's in ambush predation mode.
Scientists are investigating the Mariana Trench and other deepwater areas around it from April 20 to July 10.
