VIDEO: Mexico Volcano Explodes, Covers Nearby City With Ash
PUEBLA (CBS13) – A dramatic overnight explosion sent ash blowing over a major Mexican city early Monday morning.
Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano saw an eruption overnight. The whole event was caught on video.
Officials are now urging people in the city of Puebla, which is directly east of the volcano, to wear masks so as to avoid inhaling the fine grit from the explosion. Houses and cars in the area are covered in the ash.
The eruption began around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, according to Mexico's national disaster prevention agency. Glowing rock was thrown as far as a mile in the explosion, and ash rose nearly two miles above the crater.
About 25 million people live within 62 miles of the volcano, which has seen periodic eruptions since 1994.
