Victim In Sierra Pile-up ID'd

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities have identified the man who died in a crash involving about 40 vehicles on a snowy Sierra Nevada highway, as a powerful storm continues to make for slick road conditions throughout Northern California.

Placer County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Clark on Saturday said the victim was Douglas Swasey, an Auburn-area resident in his late 60s.

The California Highway Patrol tells KGO-TV that Swasey was killed in the Friday afternoon crash on Interstate 80 near Yuba Gap after stepping out of his truck to either put chains on or try to get it free.

More than a dozen people were hospitalized with minor to moderate injuries.

Snow and rain are expected to continue over the weekend.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman J.D. Guidi said about 6,900 customers in and around the utility's Sierra division were still experiencing storm-related power outages.
