300-Acre Vegetation Fire Caused By Discarded Cigarette In Suisun City
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) — Firefighters battled a 300-acre grass fire in Suisun City near Walters Road and Highway 12.
The Suisun City Fire Department said a discarded cigarette sparked the three-alarm vegetation fire on Peterson Road Monday afternoon.
By the time crews arrived on the scene, officials say the Peterson Fire was already more than five acres and being driven by at least 30 mph winds.
Firefighters said the fire did jump Highway 12 and several vehicles did get stuck on the road for a period of time. Crews were able to get the vehicles out safely and shut down the freeway.
The fire was burning near the South Gate of Travis Air Force Base and Travis firefighters are assisting the Suisun City Fire Department, Fairfield Fire Department and Suisun Fire Protection District.
By 5 p.m., Travis AFB officials said the fire was extinguished. There were no reports of structure damage.
No homes were threatened and no evacuations were ordered.
