UPDATE: 150 Inmates In Riot, 11 Hospitalized
REPRESA (CBS13) – There were 150 maximum-security inmates involved in Wednesday's riot at California State Prison-Sacramento and 11 had to be hospitalized, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
Per department policy, CDCR's Deadly Force Investigations Team is investigating correctional officers' use of lethal rounds to help quell the riot, which broke out at about 12:40 p.m., and its Investigative Services Unit is looking into what caused the outbreak.
Correctional officers used pepper spray, rubber projectiles and seven lethal rounds to stop the riot, which lasted about 10 minutes.
Nine of the inmates were treated for minor injuries and released. Two remained hospitalized Thursday morning, one for a gunshot wound to the leg and the other for facial injuries and a possible broken shoulder. No inmates were critically injured in the riot.
More than 400 prison staff responded to the incident. No staff members were injured in the riot, according to CDCR. Previously reported injuries to staff were not related to the riot, the department said.
Correctional officers recovered five inmate-manufactured weapons after the riot.
CSP-Sacramento, also known as New Folsom Prison, houses about 2,800 inmates and employs more than 1,700 staff. It opened in 1986 and primarily houses maximum-security inmates serving long sentences and those who have proved to be management problems at other prisons.
