Ugliest Street: Fair Oaks Gets Facelift
CARMICHAEL (CBS13) - Construction signs are already up, warning drivers to expect delays in Carmichael.
Known as the biggest eye-sore the city has to offer, Fair Oaks Boulevard is undergoing a much needed improvement.
"This is a 50-year-old stretch of road and it is in need of updating. One of the things we hope to do is work with SMUD to clean up the overhead power lines and do some cleaning," said Susan Peters, Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.
The project has involved years of public meetings with the county and community input.
The first phase will fix parts of sidewalks, enhance bike lanes, create signals for the disabled and upgrade safety features.
But while many business owners are thrilled construction has begun, one florist shop owner says they've already felt the effects.
"We lost like 20 percent of the business but I am hoping, after they are done, everything will pay back. But we need to work with them and be patient," said owner Fotios Papadopoulos.
While some argue the return investment is priceless.
Others are offering incentives for the inconvenience.
"Were doing free delivery because of the construction going on," said Papadopoulos.
From new trees to better lighting, phase one should be complete by November.
Until then, one thing's for sure, expect delays.
"We don't know what the future will bring but we should let the government update the streets and sidewalks; and, let the private sector know where they want the investment," said Peters.
It's a little price to pay for an even bigger pay off.
