UC Davis Student's Missing Dog Found Dead Near Railroad Tracks
UPDATE: Shortly after this story aired, CBS13 learned that Varon had found Nessa dead.

UC DAVIS (CBS13) — A deadly car crash left a UC Davis student desperately searching for one of his dogs on the Yolo Causeway.
Sam Varon says he lost two dogs in that accident—one died in the crash, but the other may still be running scared in nearby fields.
The last thing he remembers was traveling across the Yolo Causeway on Tuesday night.
"I either blacked out or passed out and flipped my car," he said.
Bruised and battered from a violent single-car wreck, Varon not only lost consciousness, but also precious cargo.
"Apparently Munchie, one of my dogs that rescued two years ago passed away immediately," he said.
Munchie was his heart. Nessa, his German shorthair he rescued several months ago is still missing.
Varon is worried Nessa was thrown from the car and is now running somewhere in the vast, open fields near the causeway.
"She's a great dog, very loving," he said. "Loves to snuggle."
The four-year veterinary medicine student at UC Davis has a heart for all animals, but a special affection for Nessa. He adopted her a few months ago after the owners were going to euthanize her. Nessa had a broken leg and they couldn't afford the surgery.
Varon paid for it himself.
"I thought it was worth every penny to fix her. I knew if I fixed her she'd have a normal life," he said.
And they were a happy little family until Tuesday night's crash.
His friends have walked the fields, calling out for Nessa, but no answer. They even put up a poster for passing hikers and cyclists.
Varon has come to grips that Munchie is gone, but the aspiring veterinarian can't even fathom not holding Nessa again.
"If I'm able to find her and have her back in my life would just mean so much," he said.
The 1-year-old German shorthair pointer has surgery scars on her left hind leg. She's not chipped, but has a large, copper tag on her collar.
