UC Davis Cornerback Could Face Dismissal After Domestic Assault Arrest
UC DAVIS (CBS13) — A UC Davis football player is facing a felony charge of domestic assault, after an alleged altercation with his girlfriend.
Senior Patrick Wells, a starting cornerback on the Aggies is now suspended from the team, and could face more discipline from the school.
Davis police arrested Wells Saturday after his girlfriend reported being physically attacked.
"The allegation was that following the argument, he had grabbed her and would not let her out of the car," Davis police lieutenant Paul Doroshov said.
The incident unfolded outside an apartment complex on J and 8th street in Davis.
Police say the altercation was in part over her keys, the victim says wells would not give to her.
Davis police have a pro-arrest policy in cases of alleged domestic violence.
"Meaning that if probably cause is there of sufficient proof is there, we make the arrest. We prefer to safe guard the victim," Doroshov said.
Following the arrest UC Davis spokesperson Dana Topousis released a statement reading in part:
"He will be dismissed from the team should the charges be substantiated, in accordance with the UC Davis football code of conduct."
And "the University takes all charges of dating violence and domestic violence seriously."
Lily Goldfield is a UC Davis student who says she will be watching how the university handles the discipline of wells--if the allegations are proven true.
"He's out there in the spotlight more than any other students And he's better known and the story will get more attention then a normal student," Goldfield said.
Police say Wells girlfriend had evidence of minor injuries.
Wells was booked into Yolo County jail and released.
