UC Data Shows Another Jump In Nonresident Students

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The University of California will welcome many more students from outside the state this fall.

New data released Thursday show big jumps in the number of out-of-state and international students who intend to enroll at UC's nine undergraduate campuses for the fall 2011 term.

The number of incoming freshmen and transfer students from California dipped slightly to 51,715.

But the number of out-of-staters rose 58 percent to about 2,600, while the number of international students rose 25 percent to more than 5,700.

Nonresident students will make up 13.9 percent of incoming freshmen and transfer students this fall, up from 10.7 percent last fall.

UC officials say currently less than 6 percent of all UC undergraduates are nonresidents. They expect that number to remain below 10 percent for the foreseeable future.
