Two Calif. Schools Vying To Host Presidential Debate

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) -- Two San Francisco Bay area schools are on a list of 12 colleges and universities vying to host a presidential debate next year.

The Marin Independent Journal reports that Dominican University in Marin County and Saint Mary's College in Contra Costa County have submitted applications to host one of the four planned presidential debates to the commission that sponsors and produces them.

The Commission on Presidential Debates is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that stages debates for presidential and vice presidential candidates.

Dominican President Joseph Fink says publicity from the debate would increase the school's profile and could dramatically boost applications.

The university hosted a gubernatorial debate last year. It expects to hear more from the commission within the next week or so.
