Turlock Arts Center Reopens With Style After Arson

TURLOCK (CBS13) – Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, a town landmark is reopening to acclaim six years after being destroyed by an arsonist.

Officials at the Turlock Carnegie Arts Center kept some of the bricks stained by smoke from the destructive 2005 blaze, but the entire center was otherwise rebuilt and expanded.

"After the fire the only thing left was the four walls, the ceiling had collapsed and was completely gone," said executive director Rebecca Phillips. "There was a community effort rebuild and expand that center and in the process, Turlock meets an unmet need for our region."

At least 100 volunteers helped breathe life into the 95-year-old historical site after burglars set the place on fire.

The Regional Arts Center will hold its opening ceremony Saturday with a special Ansel Adams exhibit that will showcase beautiful landscapes and a glimpse into the famous photographer's life.

Jeanne Falke Adams, the famous photographer's daughter-in-law, said she hopes the exhibition attract new art fans.

"I think it's approachable, it's friendly, inviting, might be inspiring," Adams said. "It may be the thing where everyone can connect in some way.

The reopening art center will offer free admission Saturday and Sunday. More information can be found on the center's web site.
