Truck Carrying 24 Tons Of Glass Crashes In West Sacramento
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Roads were closed for hours near the Port of Sacramento on Tuesday morning after a semi truck carrying tons of glass overturned, leaving a pile of sharp glass shards scattered over the roadway.
The accident happened just after 9 a.m. on Industrial Boulevard at Harbor Boulevard.
The truck carrying 48,000 pounds of sheet glass tipped over as it turned onto Industrial from Harbor Boulevard.
Along with the pile of shattered glass, the truck began leaking diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid and oil.
"Right now we have a berm with an absorbent product so it doesn't go under the side of the road here. So it's contained underneath the vehicle at this time," said John Muir of the West Sacramento Fire Department.
The driver and a passenger in the truck walked away unscathed.
They tell CBS13 they were hauling 24 tons of glass that was stacked in the middle of the truck that made it top heavy when making the turn onto Industrial.
The accident caused a traffic mess around the port.
"This is the main road into the south part of our city. So, it is an inconvenience and it is affecting traffic," Muir said.
The driver says he picked up the load Tuesday morning near Fresno and was supposed to deliver it to a business on Industrial.
