Travis Air Force Base Sends Relief to New York
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) - Crews and equipment from Travis Air Force Base are heading east to help with relief efforts in areas devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
A C-17 took off late Thursday morning carrying passengers and cargo, including 69 vehicles from Southern California Edison utility company to New York. The plane will arrive at Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York where the crews and cargo will give support efforts to restore power and provide humanitarian aid.
It is the second plane to leave Travis to help in the stricken areas.
Earlier, Travis sent a C-5 with 30 personnel from the 60th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and the 570 Mobility Squadron to help in the relief effort.
The Air Force has helped recovery efforts after previous domestic natural disasters like Hurricanes Katrina, Rita Ike and Gustav, as well as international relief efforts after the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the nuclear crisis in Japan.
