Tracy Offers Residents Great Deals Online If They Shop Local

TRACY (CBS13) -- A local city is taking on Groupon, offering people great deals; up to 90 percent off if they shop local.

About a dozen Tracy businesses are taking advantage of a new online coupon site called Tryitlocal.com.

The Chamber of Commerce Operations Manager says it works like similar sites.

"You click on that and you'll be registered," explains Sofia Valenzuela, Tracy Chamber of Commerce.

But here, instead of splitting the profits down the middle, the business gets a bigger piece of the pie: Instead of 50 percent they get 70 percent, the site gets 20 percent, and the Chamber of Commerce gets 10 percent.

"So, essentially 80 percent of the profits are staying in the local community, and that's the part the Chamber really found attractive," said Valenzuela.

The Chamber plans on using the profits to bring in more business to downtown Tracy, and so far it's working.

"It's essentially free advertising for 48 hours.  We've sold over 100 coupons, and that's equated to about $1000 in savings for consumers," says Valenzuela.

The online coupon is a hit at De Vinci's Delicatessen in Downtown Tracy.

Thirty customers clicked on coupons to munch on $18 of food for only $9.

"Because it's their first time coming in they can try it out. Most people liked it, and we've seen a lot of people coming back in for more," said Sam Zimmerman, De Vinci's Delicatessen.

And that's exactly what the Chamber hopes to accomplish; keep deals local and help customers discover new spots.
