Tracy Considers Stepping Up Enforcement Of Yard Sale Sign Ban
TRACY (CBS13) — The city of Tracy is considering cracking down on yard sale signs with fines.
This weekend, displaying American flags shows you're a patriot. But post a yard sale sign in Tracy and you're a rebel.
The city of Tracy outlawed signs posted on city-owned traffic poles, medians, trees and street signs, making traditional yard sale advertising illegal.
"There's just a few items here in the garage. It's a moving sale so almost everything needs to go," said Nathan Bahr.
He paid for a newspaper ad to help the moving sale.
"Right in the morning, obviously a few people heard about it and they started pouring in and get all the big ticket items," he said.
Sandy Avila posted an ad on Craigslist. She's only had a handful of customers and says posting actual signs works best.
"People drive by, they see the signs. It's very easy just to follow the arrows," she said.
The signs have been forbidden since 2012 when the city said the signs cause blight when they're left up too long and can be safety hazards for drivers.
"It makes it a little bit more difficult for people having a yard sale, because they'll then have to go through a newspaper or Craigslist," Bahr said.
They understand the city's concern, but would like the opportunity to post and then clean up the signs after the sale. After all, the city can easily find the litterbugs—their addresses are on the signs.
