Tow Truck Operator Killed On Highway 50

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. (CBS13) -- A tow truck driver was killed and two others injured when a big rig crashed Monday evening on the side of westbound Highway 50.

The California Highway Patrol said a tow truck was assisting a privately owned school bus that had broken down near the Latrobe Road exit at about 6:30 p.m. when a big rig veered onto the shoulder and struck the bus from behind.

The tow truck operator, who was outside of his vehicle while hoisting the disabled bus, was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

The big rig flipped onto its side, inflicting moderate injuries on the driver, who was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center. The driver of the bus suffered minor injuries.

Traffic on westbound Highway 50 was restricted to a single lane for hours while authorities investigated the deadly accident.

The identities of the victims have not been released.
