UPDATE: Tow Truck Driver Killed On Interstate 80 Identified

AUBURN (CBS13) - A tow truck driver killed by a hit-and-run vehicle on Interstate 80 near Newcastle on Tuesday afternoon has been identified, but the driver who hit him has still not been located.

The Placer County Coroner's Office on Wednesday identified the victim as 30-year-old David Garfield Robinson Jr.

Robinson was hit while standing outside his Golden State Towing truck near his front door and partially in the No. 3 lane about 4:15 Tuesday, the CHP said.

Several witnesses stopped to aid Robinson, but the driver of the car that hit him drove off.

Placer County Fire paramedics performed CPR at the scene before Robinson was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

On Wednesday, a fundraiser was being held at at the grand opening of Bill McAnally Auto Service and Repair in Roseville, where Robinson's friends mourned him and asked for justice.

Mal Helmuth still can't believe his friend and bowling rival was killed - and even more so, that the driver who hit him has not come forward.

"I wish they would come forward and say that they are woman enough or man enough to say they took someone from us," he said. "And even if it was accidental, all we want to know is what happened."

Right now, the CHP is still trying to put together what happened. Robinson wasn't in the middle of a service call and investigators don't know why he was pulled over.

Golden State Towing, which is based out of Sacramento, is not commenting on the accident.

For Helmuth, it seems like yesterday he watched Robinson bowl a perfect game.

"When someone that young is taken from us tragically, and someone that had so much potential and such a good guy, what can you say?" he said.

The CHP has been receiving calls throughout the day from witnesses, and investigators say they recovered evidence from the crash scene they believe will help them solve the case.

Meanwhile, friends like Bill McAnally are organizing a fundraiser in honor of Robinson.

"It's just a tragic thing to see something like this happen and our hearts go out to the family, and hopefully we can do some fundraising tonight," he said.

Anyone with any information about the accident or a description of the vehicle and/or driver that fled the scene is asked to call the Auburn area CHP Office at (916) 663-3344.
