Tonight's New Year's Eve Fireworks Shows Touted As Largest Ever For Old Sac
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - For the 14th year in a row, the city of Sacramento is holding its New Year's Eve Sky Spectacular.
Workers began at 6 a.m. preparing for the fireworks shows, which are expected to be the largest of their kind ever put on in Old Sacramento. The larger of the two shows begins at 9 p.m., which is different from previous years when the big show began at midnight.
"It's the biggest show we've done. In the past, we've launched fireworks from two locations. This year, we're got them from 15 locations," said Mike Testa, with the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Eight thousand fireworks will be launched over the course of the shows.
"Fifteen minutes for the 9 o'clock show and about 8 minutes for the midnight," said Testa.
The first show, which goes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., will be for family and kids. At about 9:30, the program will begin for bigger kids, says Testa.
In addition to fireworks, there will also be musical acts.
There is parking available in two garages in Old Sacramento – one garage is by the Tower Bridge and the other off of I Street. Visitors may find more open parking spots if they use the Downtown Plaza parking garage and walk through the tunnel to Old Sacramento.
Organizers expect anywhere from 30,000 to 45,000 visitors.
Tower Bridge will be closed from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.
More than 100 officers are expected to be roaming the crowd.
