Toddler's Near-Drowning Brings Life Vest Reminders At Folsom Lake
FOLSOM LAKE (CBS13) — A toddler's near-drowning at Folsom Lake is a frightening reminder to parents to make sure their child is wearing a properly fitting life vest.
Rescuers say the 2-year-old, who was wearing a life vest, fell face first into shallow water. While wearing a life vest does offer a degree of protection for children, Sacramento City Fire's Niko King says it needs to be the right size.
"They are designed specifically to position the body correctly and keep the head above the surface of the water," he said.
And even with a life vest that fits, adult supervision is still needed around the water.
"Kids are kids," King said. "They're going to unsnap these. They are going to want to take them off."
A lot of beaches along the river have free life jackets, but your best bet is one that fits you. King said most life jackets run less than $20.
