Timeline May Halt Kings' Move Out Of Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- The rumored deal to move the Sacramento Kings to Southern California has taken a pessimistic turn for fans in recent weeks, but if the deal doesn't move forward soon, it may become impossible to make the move before the start of next season.

NBA officials confirmed to CBS13 that the extension granted to the Maloof brothers has pushed the timetable for a possible relocation back to within weeks of the start of the new season.

- The Maloofs are scheduled to meet with the NBA board of governors on April 14 and 15, and they will have until the 18 to apply for relocation.
- The NBA will have until April 28 to form a committee to study the move.
- The deadline for the committee to provide a recommendation to the league will be due within 120 days, or August 26.
- The owners will have 30 more days to vote on the move, which pushes the deadline back to September 25, just two weeks before the start of the NBA season.

NBA commissioner David Stern likely has a lot of discretion in speeding the process up, but if the dates are followed, the tight timeline could play havoc with game schedules and ticket sales.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says he believes the Kings have "one foot out the door and three or four toes also out the door," and hopes to convince another NBA franchise to come to Sacramento if the Kings leave.
