Three Charged After Assault At California Prison
SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Three inmates at a federal prison in northeastern California have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy and assaulting a fellow inmate.
The indictment was announced Thursday by the U.S. attorney's office in Sacramento.
The seriously injured inmate was flown to a Reno, Nev., hospital after the July 5 assault at Herlong Federal Correctional Institution. The medium-security prison is 50 miles northwest of Reno.
Charged in the beating are 29-year-old Erwin Shane Stamper of Newport, Tenn., 24-year-old Grant Morgan Bigley of San Clemente and 34-year-old Ryan Joel Zejdlik of Woods Cross, Utah.
U.S. attorney's office spokeswoman Lauren Horwood says none of the three men has a lawyer. If convicted, they face up to five more years in prison for conspiracy and 10 years for assault.
