Thousands Of Jellyfish Wash Ashore In Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― Beachgoers along San Francisco's Ocean Beach had to be careful where they stepped after tens of thousands of jellyfish washed up on the beach this weekend.

National Park Service ranger George Durgerian says the jellyfish, called moon jellyfish, were found covering an area he described as wide as a sidewalk and at least two miles long on the beach Saturday morning.

It's not clear what brought the creatures ashore, but Durgerian says it could have been any number of factors.

Because the jellyfish can't fight the current, he says they may have been washed up on the beach by a large overnight swell.

Durgerian says in the past 17 years this is only the second time he has seen so many jellyfish wash ashore.

By Sunday afternoon, high tides has washed most of the jellyfish back out to sea.
